A unique professional qualification in consulting to organisations
Please note: We do not plan to accept new students for this course in the academic year 2025/26, however our professional doctorate in Advanced practice and research consultation and the organisation (D10D) is open for applications.
Please note: you may see the D10C course also referred to as SCTCTP001 in communications from our application system.
About this course
This course will support you in the development of your consultancy practice. It includes a work-focused professional practice seminar, consultancy work discussion groups, theory led discussion groups and individual consultancy supervision.
The course is integrated across year groups and you will join with students studying for our professional doctorate in consultation and the organisation.
You will carry out consultancy projects in different settings and across sectors working alone and as part of a team.
You will become part of a learning community of consultant practitioners and researchers based at our consultancy partner, Tavistock Consulting.
You may choose to transfer to our full Professional doctorate, Advanced practice and research consultation and the organisation (D10D), after attending one or more years of this programme, successful completion of which fulfils 50% of the taught requirements for the professional doctorate.
Who is this course for?
This course is for you if you are an organisational consultant or manager who wishes to acquire a thorough grounding in a systems-psychodynamic methodology and develop your practice to an advanced level.
Course details
In order to undertake this course, we ask that you:
- have achieved a master’s in consulting to organisations from a systems-psychodynamic perspective, either at the Tavistock or another institution
- are engaged in work as a consultant, either employed or self-employed, or as an employee within an organisation with managerial responsibilities – as the teaching methods rely on learning from experience at emotional, social and intellectual levels, a capacity to work in this way is essential
We welcome applications from those with equivalent experience. You will need to be able to demonstrate that your master’s course content covered a similar syllabus to our Consulting and leading in organisations psychodynamic and systemic approaches (D10) course or that you have gained equivalent learning and experience independently.

You will be charged course fees for each year of your course. If your course is longer than one year, the fees that you will be charged after the first year will be subject to an annual inflationary increase. This will either be an increase of 3% or the Consumer Price Inflation as on 1 September of that year – whichever is the greater. At its discretion, the Trust may determine a figure between these two rates. Please refer to our Student Fees & Refund Policy for further information.
Financial support may be available to help you fund your studies at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust.
Assessment
Students are required to carry out a minimum of six consultancy assignments throughout the programme, in which they will either work alone or, where appropriate (and where the student has a primary role), as part of a team.
Five of these assignments must be written up as detailed case studies (two in years one and two and one in year three). They are assessed on the basis of application of an ethical and client-centred systems psychodynamic approach, understanding of organisational function and self-reflective capacity.
Other assignments are recorded as field notes as part of a practice log. This log is then appended to a professional development summary report which forms the last assignment which is assessed on the basis of reflective self-appraisal, consultancy mindset and the range of work presented.
