What is self-harm and what school systems can be implemented to minimise a pupil’s risk?

This live online course from Gloucester House Outreach Service provides an introduction to the topic of self-harm in young people. You’ll explore the possible warning signs of self-harm and learn how to recognise the risk factors that can lead to it occurring.

Within a safe and supportive space, and under expert guidance, you will learn how to respond to and support young people exhibiting self-harm behaviours and develop the confidence to implement school strategies that minimise risk and promote coping strategies .

Aims and learning objectives

After completing this course, you will:

  • have an improved understanding of self-harm and the possible warning signs and contributing risk factors, that can lead to it occurring
  • understand how to respond to young people exhibiting self-harm behaviours
  • feel confident in generating a positive behaviour support plan that helps minimise a pupil’s further risk of self-harm, promotes resilience and provides alternative coping strategies
  • be able to analyse systems and structures that can be implemented in schools to minimise further risk of self-harm and ensure a consistent staff approach

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for staff working directly with children and young people who are exhibiting self-harm behaviour. You may be working in a school or college as a SENCO, learning support assistant, teacher, mental health lead or a senior leader.

The course is also very relevant to a range of other settings and roles in the education, local authority, social care or voluntary sector for example care home workers, youth workers or healthcare assistants.

Course details

The course consists of a live, two-hour session hosted via Zoom. You’ll be joining a supportive group and learn about the latest educational and clinical best practice from a leading practitioner. The workshop lead will tailor content based on the needs of your cohort and there’ll be plenty of time to ask questions during the interactive session. You’ll leave the session with take-away resources and practical strategies that you can implement in your setting.
