Supporting the development of experienced nurses and allied health professionals in the facilitation of clinical supervision

This training aims to support the development of experienced nurses and allied health professionals in the facilitation of clinical supervision. Through the programme, you will be supported in developing your facilitation skills, awareness of relevant concepts and gaining clarity in the purpose and parameters of reflective clinical supervision. The training covers both group and individual supervision, and you will gain experience in both facilitating a group and being a group member.

We can deliver this training for individuals or to organisations.

Aims and learning objectives

By completing this course, you will:

  • develop an understanding of models and functions of clinical supervision
  • increase skills and confidence in facilitating reflective clinical supervision sessions
  • develop an understanding of group dynamics in group supervision
  • explore key psychodynamic concepts and their relevance to supervision
  • gain working knowledge of the parameters of clinical supervision
  • increase your awareness of the dynamics of difference including diversity, inclusion power and equity within group work
  • gain experience in a reflective clinical supervision group
  • understand how to utilise supervision for support and development

Who is this course for?

The course has been developed to meet the needs of nurses and allied health professionals who will be providing clinical supervision within their roles and feel that they would benefit from learning and support in this area. The course focuses on the reflective aspect of clinical supervision, acknowledging not only tasks and process but also the impact of work and working relationships. It provides a framework for understanding communications and work-place dynamics.

This course will be delivered remotely using Zoom, and the session will not be recorded.

You will need a device with a microphone and camera together with a suitably fast internet connection. Although mobile devices and tablets can be used, we recommend the use of a laptop or desktop PC for the best experience. Some devices provided by employers may have restrictions in place. Below is an example programme for the course which takes place over six-half days. These sessions consist of some taught content, as well as large and small group work.

Each session will comprise three sections, with the final section being a reflective clinical supervision group. During the first two sections, you will explore different aspects of reflective clinical supervision and the related theory, practice and skills. Within the reflective clinical supervision, you will be invited to take up different roles to gain experience and to reflect on the positions you have held.

Session one

You will:

  • be introduced to the course and discuss your hopes and expectations
  • review the aims and objectives of reflective clinical supervision
  • explore and critique the benefits of reflective clinical supervision
  • take part in a reflective clinical supervision group

Session two

You will:

  • review the role of the facilitator and their core skills and boundaries
  • explore group dynamics (session one)
  • take part in a reflective clinical supervision group

Session three

You will:

  • develop active listening and questioning skills
  • explore group dynamics (session two)
  • take part in a reflective clinical supervision group

Session four

You will:

  • explore emotional communication and how to understand projections and containment
  • understand the dynamics of difference within group work
  • take part in a reflective clinical supervision group

Session five

You will:

  • explore how to establish reflective clinical supervision groups, focusing on practicalities and communication
  • discuss challenges in practice
  • take part in a reflective clinical supervision group

Session six

You will:

  • explore how to support group members and others to make use of the group
  • discuss reflections in small groups and reflect on learning and next steps
  • take part in a reflective clinical supervision group

Each session will start with a check-in, and we will be practising the skills and values of reflective clinical supervision within the sessions. This means that we will endeavour to foster curiosity, treat each other with respect and compassion and create a safe learning environment.

Each week there will be a paper to read in your own self-study time (all reading material is provided through the Tavistock and Portman Library).

Written assignments

There are no written assignments for this course.

Certificate of attendance

There will be a certificate of attendance for those students who attend 80% or more of the course. The course will contribute towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours.
