Motivational interviewing (CPD5a)

Master motivational interviewing theory and skills in our practical 4-day programme

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a particular way of talking with people about change and/or personal growth with an emphasis on building motivation and commitment for the change rather than on simply finding solutions. It is an approach for working with people where change is needed or desired but the person may have become stuck.

This online training programme comprises two modules, introductory and advanced, and is led by a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). Through a range of didactic teaching, live demonstrations, audio, video and coaching, you will learn how MI can be used to help increase motivation in people to encourage behavioural or attitudinal change. This includes individuals who are reluctant to engage or who have been coerced into changing. You will examine the principles of the approach and how to apply them, before putting what you have learnt into practice and reflecting on your findings.

Aims and learning objectives

This programme will provide opportunities to observe and practise the approach in a protected environment. By the end of the programme, you will have developed understanding and started to build skill in using MI in your work settings.

The introductory module aims to increase participants knowledge of the spirit and principles involved in using MI. After the course you will:

Introductory module

  • understand the fundamental spirit and principles of the MI approach
  • be aware of the four processes/ tasks of MI (the structure of an MI conversation)
  • strengthen empathic counselling skills (OARS)
  • understand the guiding aspects of MI
  • feel confident in raising concerns and giving information, or education, in an MI style (information exchange)
  • directly experience the MI approach in a protective environment
  • be acquainted with the relevant evidence of efficacy

Advanced module

The advanced module will be adjusted to the learning needs of each cohort. It will provide MI practitioners with an opportunity to develop skill and confidence in the use of MI.

Topics that you are likely to explore include:

  • a brief refresher of the spirit, principles and skills of MI
  • becoming more confident and proficient in the use of reflections, including depth of reflection and reflections with direction
  • how to become more responsive to the process, recognising and responding to ‘sustain talk’ and ‘discord and change talk’
  • working with goals and values
  • building confidence for change with service users
  • recognising signs that indicate readiness to change and help clients move towards activation (from evoking to planning

Who is this course for?

This programme is comprised of two parts: an introductory and an advanced module.

The introductory module is aimed at any professional working with adults, young people, children or families, where behavioural or attitudinal change is needed or desired. It will provide opportunities to observe and practise the approach in a protected environment. This module is also suitable as a refresher for people who trained in MI some time ago.

Professionals who have previously found this training helpful include psychologists, psychiatrists, GPs, social workers, dentists, speech and language therapists, midwives, nurses, health visitors, sports coaches, youth workers and teachers.

The advanced module is for those who have completed the two-day introductory module and would like to develop their understanding and skill in using motivational interviewing.

Please note: MI does not have an evidence base for working with people with significant learning difficulties.

The two modules can be booked separately but satisfactory completion of the introductory module is required before joining the advanced module. Find out more about booking these courses separately in the ‘Modules included in this programme’ section below.

Motivational Interviewing is an approach that first gained an evidence base for working with people with substance use problems. It has evolved as a generalisable approach for working with people where change is needed or desired but the person has perhaps become stuck or appears not to be motivated. The approach focuses on intrinsic factors for change even when extrinsic factors, such as the court, social workers or family, have brought them to the worker.

MI builds is a collaborative approach which has the added benefit for individuals and organisations of reducing worker stress and the risk of burn out. As well as being used in conversations about change, motivational interviewing can also be used to have conversations about personal growth and development.

This programme will be delivered by a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) who has worked and trained across a wide range of settings, such as substance use, mental health, probation, youth offending and childcare social work.

Introductory module:

The introductory module (two days) introduces participants to the theory, spirit and principles which underpin using MI to help people make positive change. You will be taught (or refresh your knowledge of) active listening skills and learn how to apply them in motivational interviewing conversations. You will examine the importance of language in conversation and how to identify and respond to ‘change talk’, and soften or reduce ‘sustain talk’. You will also explore how you can provide suggestions or advice in a way that is consistent with MI. Finally, you will learn what to try and avoid in conversations, for example ‘fixing’ problems for people.

Advanced module:

The advanced module (two days) is designed to build on your learning from the introductory module, further developing your skill and confidence in the practical application of this approach. You will have time between the introductory module and each session of the advanced module to try out some of what you have learned and reflect upon the use of MI in your own settings. Much of the learning occurs through discussion and self-reflection.

You will typically deepen your understanding of MI by taking some key aspects of the approach and spending time on understanding and practising it with other participants. Usual topics covered in the advanced module include further development of active listening skills, the importance of empathy, managing ‘difficult’ conversations, the significance of values and building confidence for change.

The two modules that make up this programme can be booked separately.

Satisfactory completion of the introductory module is required to join the advanced module.
