Robin Solomon

Clinical Social Worker and Psychotherapist

Robin Solomon originally trained as a clinical social worker and psychotherapist in NYC in 1979. After working in both New York and London, she joined the staff at Brunel University where she taught social work.

In 2001, she joined the staff at the Tavistock Clinic, where she worked as both a clinician and educator. Her clinical home was in the fostering, adoption and kinship care service, and she developed an MA in Fostering and adoption studies.

Robin’s passion has always been exploring the boundaries between the internal world focused on by therapists and the external world inhabited by social and political realities and the professionals who practice within and between these worlds.

Having retired from her clinical role in 2016, she continues, as a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy, to teach as a visiting lecturer.

She also works independently as a staff consultant to NHS CAMHS teams and residential homes for LACA. In this capacity she has acted as a consultant to the East Sussex AdCAMHS service.

In keeping with her passion for teaching psychoanalytic theory to social workers and other allied mental health practitioners, she has recently co-edited a textbook, What social workers need to know – a psychoanalytic perspective (eds Bower, M. and Solomon, R., 2018, Routledge) and is in the process of producing a further text using psychoanalytic theory to help develop understanding and interventions in relation to child sexual exploitation. She contributed to Alison Roy’s book, A for adoption.
