Psychoanalyst

Dr. Avgi Saketopoulou is a Cypriot and Greek psychoanalyst on faculty at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. She writes on gender, sexuality, and race, and her publications have received numerous prizes-including the Ralph Roughton award and twice the annual JAPA Essay Prize. In 2021, she co-chaired the first conference in the U.S. dedicated on the work of Jean Laplanche. In her 2023 monograph, Sexuality Beyond Consent: Risk, Race, Traumatophilia, Avgi braids psychoanalytic theory with philosophy, Black feminisms, and queer of color critique to explore sexual and clinical consent, putting pressure on current analytic discourses on trauma. She is in critical conversation with Dominique Scarfone in his book The Reality of the Message: Psychoanalysis in the wake of Jean Laplanche and she has been working with trans children and their families and with trans adults for over twenty years.
