Motivational interviewing: advanced module (CPD5b)
Refine your skills further to help others to make behavioural or attitudinal change
Motivational interviewing is a person-centred counselling style for addressing the common problem of ambivalence about change.
It’s a highly effective approach in helping people make behavioural or attitudinal change, especially with individuals who are apparently reluctant to engage or who have been coerced into changing. The approach focuses on intrinsic factors for change even when extrinsic factors, such as the court, social workers or family, have brought them to the worker.
Motivational interviewing builds a collaborative approach and has the added benefit for individuals and organisations of reducing worker stress and the risk of burn out.
It has its roots in the field of substance use but has now been successfully used in a multitude of settings, including probation and youth offending, mental health, GP and other healthcare settings, the reduction of HIV infection, Family Nurse Partnerships, pain management, improvement in recovery from stroke and increasingly in childcare settings.
Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based approach with over 1200 randomised control trials and is also helpful in reducing worker stress.
Aims and learning objectives
The advanced module will provide MI practitioners with an opportunity to develop skill and confidence in the use of MI. You will have opportunities to observe and practise the approach in a protected environment. By the end of the module, participants will have developed a deeper understanding and sharpened their skills in using motivational interviewing.
This module will be adjusted to the learning needs of each cohort. Topics that you are likely to explore include:
- a brief refresher of the spirit, principles and skills of MI
- becoming more confident and proficient in the use of reflections, including depth of reflection and reflections with direction
- how to become more responsive to the process, recognising and responding to ‘sustain talk’ and ‘discord and change talk’
- working with goals and values
- building confidence for change with service users
- recognising signs that indicate readiness to change and help clients move towards activation (from evoking to planning)
Who is this course for?
The advanced module is for those who have completed the two-day introductory module and would like to develop their understanding and skill in using motivational interviewing.
Please note: MI does not have an evidence base for working with people with significant learning difficulties.

The advanced module (two days) is designed to build on your learning from the introductory module, further developing your skill and confidence in the practical application of this approach. You will have time between the introductory module and each session of the advanced module to try out some of what you have learned and reflect upon the use of MI in your own settings. Much of the learning occurs through discussion and self-reflection.
You will typically deepen your understanding of MI by taking some key aspects of the approach and spending time on understanding and practising it with other participants. Usual topics covered in the advanced module include further development of active listening skills, the importance of empathy, managing ‘difficult’ conversations, the significance of values and building confidence for change.
This programme will be delivered by a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) who has worked and trained across a wide range of settings, such as substance use, mental health, probation, youth offending and childcare social work.
Please be aware that satisfactory completion of the introductory motivational interviewing module is required in order to join this advanced module.
