Welcoming Dr Nick Waggett to the Tavistock and Portman

Dr Nick Waggett joins us in January 2024 to take up the role of course lead for Advanced practice and research: consultation and the organisation (D10D) and the Tavistock qualification in consultation (D10C)

We are delighted to share that Dr Nick Waggett has joined the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust as course lead for our professional doctorate in Advanced practice and research: consultation and the organisation (D10D) and the Tavistock qualification in consultation (D10C). Dr Waggett brings a wealth of professional and academic experience to the role, including time spent undertaking his own Master’s degree and professional doctorate, and teaching on a number of programmes at the Trust.

Dr Waggett began his academic journey with an Honours Degree in Social Policy and Administration from Leeds Polytechnic, before gaining Master’s degrees in Health Service Studies at the Nuffield Institute/University of Leeds and in Consulting and leading in organisations: psychodynamic and systemic approaches (D10) here at the Tavistock and Portman, both with Distinction. Following this, Dr Waggett undertook a range of organisational consultancy work across the health and social care sectors before completing our professional doctorate in Advanced practice and research: consultation and the organisation (D10D) in 2017. His thesis investigated the impact of information and communication technologies on organisational processes in the human services, and he is keen to further develop this work, especially as we enter the era of artificial intelligence.

From 2018 to 2023, Dr Waggett was Chief Executive of the Association of Child Psychotherapists, where he led negotiations with NHS England that resulted in the doubling of training places in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and inclusion in the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan. Prior to that, he was a manager in the NHS for 26 years, including leading the establishment of the Northern School of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy in Leeds, one of our partner organisations. He was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the University of East London in 2006 in recognition of his contribution to workforce training and development.

On his appointment to the role, Dr Waggett said:

“I am hugely honoured to have the opportunity to lead the professional doctorate and qualification in consultation and the organisation. These are unique programmes that provide students with an advanced and sophisticated education in organisational consultancy. I aim to raise their profile and ensure they are accessible and welcoming to all communities. I will be joining a very experienced and qualified course team and look forward to working with colleagues and students at the Tavistock and Portman.”
