New online course on complex trauma
Now open for bookings, our latest self-study course provides an accessible introduction to working with complex trauma.
Our new online CPD course, An introduction to complex trauma (DAA040), is now available, supporting professionals working across a wide range of settings to improve the experiences of those living with complex trauma.
Over five hours of independent study, participants will explore key psychoanalytic concepts, attachment theory and neuroscience in relation to complex trauma, and consider how this learning can be applied in practice.
Developed in collaboration with our award-winning trauma service and an advisory panel of people with lived experience, the course uses case studies, personal reflections and original artwork to bring the subject matter vividly to life.
Course lead Laura Salter, who is a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist in the Tavistock Trauma Service, commented:
“I am proud to have worked alongside professionals and people with lived experience of complex trauma to create this course. Research has shown that nearly 8% of UK adults will experience PTSD at some point during their life, and that 13% of the UK population may experience complex PTSD symptoms over the course of their lives. Complex trauma sits at the root of many of the challenges faced by people accessing mental health services, and they are frequently misunderstood, misdiagnosed or responded to in ways that unintentionally cause further harm. It is therefore vital that all professionals who work with people who may experience complex trauma – from GPs and counsellors to social workers and educators – have access to high-quality training in this area.”
The course is primarily for those whose work may bring them into contact with people experiencing complex trauma, but who do not necessarily work in a trauma-focused setting or context, including those working in adult mental health services, the wider health and social care sector, voluntary organisations and adult education settings.
