About us

We are The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, a specialist mental health Trust that provides training and education that changes lives

All of our courses are carefully developed and supported by our faculty of expert NHS clinician-tutors. This means that the education you receive is relevant and up-to-date – those that treat our patients, teach our students.

Our validated courses are awarded by the University of Essex, ranked in the global top 100 of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which ranks more than 1,400 universities around the world.

Our clinical courses are accredited by the leading, trusted governance bodies; our clinical graduates are sought after and able to practice immediately.

What’s more, students at The Tavistock and Portman regard our education as ‘gold standard‘ and 93% would recommend our courses to a friend or colleague.

Our people

We’re proud of our staff and students and the world-class expertise that we have built up over the last century.

We are an inclusive workplace and are committed to the elimination of discrimination, harassment and victimisation in the delivery of all our services. We seek a culture that promotes equality and meets people’s mental health needs.

We change lives. Since 1920, we have proudly been at the forefront of exploring mental health and wellbeing. Over the last hundred years, the work of the clinic has continually evolved to reflect new learning and develop new methods.

Key tenets that have guided us throughout are a developmental approach, thinking contextually and reflective practice. The Tavistock and Portman has and continues to make a substantial contribution to therapeutic practice, social work, the justice system, education and organisational consultancy.

100 years of excellence

For 100 years, the Tavistock and Portman clinics have embodied a distinctive way of thinking about and understanding mental distress, mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Our clinical work

The Tavistock and Portman comprises two famous clinics: the Tavistock Clinic (founded in 1920) and the Portman Clinic (founded in 1933). Both have unique histories and cultures, and though they work together as one Trust, they maintain their own individual identities and services.

Both the Tavistock and the Portman have been at the forefront of exploring mental health and wellbeing since the First World War. Our history informs our mission and our values – we work to pioneer the development and delivery of effective clinical interventions, and to be a national and international centre of excellence for training and education.

The Tavistock and Portman is a Foundation Trust. Foundation Trusts are part of the NHS and provide over half of all NHS hospital and mental health services.
