NHS England Bursary Funding with Support from the Stuart Hall Foundation (2025-26)
Apply for bursary funding of up to £7,500 from NHS England, with support from the Stuart Hall Foundation
Applications for this NHS England bursary are invited from students on our Perinatal, Child, Adolescent and Family Work: a Psychoanalytic Observational Approach (M7) course or Psychoanalytic Studies (M16) course, who are Black, Asian or of mixed heritage, and/or are facing significant financial disadvantage, and who are planning to apply to our Professional Doctorate in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (M80).
Eligibility to apply
This bursary is for:
- Students (in Years 1, 2 or 3) of our Perinatal, Child, Adolescent and Family Work: a Psychoanalytic Observational Approach (M7) training (including M7K in Bristol);
- Or students (in Years 1 or 2) of our Psychoanalytic Studies (M16) course;
- Or students who have completed our M7 or M16 courses, but are currently studying on our Work Discussion for Graduates of Psychoanalytic Observational Studies (CPD98) course;
Who are:
- Identifying as Black, Asian or of mixed heritage;
- And/or facing significant financial disadvantage;
- Holding the necessary UK residency status for future employment by NHS Trusts;
- Planning to apply for our Professional Doctorate in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (M80).
Please note:
- Students from areas in England where child psychotherapy is not yet established are particularly encouraged to apply.
- Students receiving funding from the Training Skills Escalator (TSE) are not eligible to apply for this bursary.
- In order to be eligible for the bursary, students need to be a UK resident.
What is the bursary?
Tavistock Education and Training at North London NHS Foundation Trust is committed to widening access to its courses and clinical trainings and was successful in applying to NHS England for bursary funding for 2025-26.
The purpose of this bursary is to widen access to our Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (M80) clinical training.
We are pleased that the Stuart Hall Foundation (SHF) has also offered to provide support to successful applicants. This is an integral part of the bursary and includes individual and group mentoring, involvement in the Stuart Hall Foundation Scholars and Fellows Network and the opportunity to join PhD students, academics, clinicians, journalists, poets, artists and activists from Britain and abroad for regular discussions and a range of events.
Applications will be selected by an appointed panel including a Director of Education or a Head of Portfolio from Tavistock Education and Training. Decisions are based on the quality of the application and the outcome of an interview process. Panel decisions are final.
How can the bursary be used?
For successful applicants currently in Year 1:
Up to the limit of £7,500 per recipient, the bursary may meet the cost of the following:
- M7 or M16 course fees, up to Postgraduate Diploma qualification, including reimbursing fees for Year 1.
- It may also contribute to the cost of the Year 3 MA dissertation fee, if the student decides to undertake this.
- It may be used towards the cost of analytic or psychoanalytic psychotherapy fees to support a student, should they wish subsequently to apply for the training in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (M80).
For successful applicants currently in Year 2:
Up to the limit of £7,500 per recipient, the bursary may reimburse the cost of the following:
- Year 2 M7 or M16 course fees.
- It may also contribute to the cost of the Year 3 MA dissertation fee if the student decides to undertake this.
- It may be used towards the cost of analytic or psychoanalytic psychotherapy fees to support a student should they wish subsequently to apply for the training in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (M80).
For successful applicants currently in Year 3 or studying CPD98:
Up to the limit of £7,500 per recipient, the bursary may reimburse the cost of the following:
- Year 3 M7 course fees, and/or the cost of the MA dissertation fee if this is undertaken in a subsequent year, or the cost of the CPD98 fee.
- It may be used towards the cost of analytic or psychoanalytic psychotherapy fees to support a student should they wish subsequently to apply for the training in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (M80).
Support from the Stuart Hall Foundation
This bursary is offered jointly with the Stuart Hall Foundation and comes with support as you complete the pre-clinical component and are thinking about an application to clinical training. Upon being offered a bursary, you will be linked with a Scholar Supporter from the Stuart Hall Foundation, who will be an experienced child psychotherapist. You will meet with your assigned Scholar Supporter twice a term for the period of the bursary and will also attend a termly group meeting with other Tavistock Education and Training bursary recipients. The Scholar Supporter will also offer support with the Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (M80) application and interview process, should the bursary recipient be successful in gaining an interview. For those who are successful in gaining a place on the M80 clinical training, the Stuart Hall Foundation maintain ongoing links through regular meetings until the point of qualification.
The Stuart Hall Foundation provides independent support to students receiving the bursary, offering a thinking space to address the complex issues that can arise out of being an underrepresented student. The Stuart Hall Foundation provides an important line of connection between the pre-clinical (M7) and clinical training (M80), and offers a valuable opportunity to think about issues of race, difference, equality and inclusion as they feature in the educational route towards professional training in child psychotherapy.
Those who are successful in obtaining a bursary will benefit from working with the Stuart Hall Foundation to develop their career and research profile. As a bursary scholar, you will be able to engage with, and contribute to, the resources and networks of the Stuart Hall Foundation, including an annual gathering of Stuart Hall Foundation Scholars and Fellows. You will also have privileged access to the work of the Foundation.

Inspired by the life and work of Jamaican-born British public intellectual Stuart Hall, founding figure of British Cultural Studies, key arts supporter, inspirational educator and leading voice for social justice, the Stuart Hall Foundation was established in 2015 to address urgent questions of race, class and intersecting inequalities through a commitment to public education.
The Stuart Hall Foundation is committed to providing opportunities for students and academics, pursuing themes resonant with the work of Professor Stuart Hall and that of the Foundation. Acutely aware of the obstacles to achievement in higher education faced by young people from culturally diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds – evidenced by admissions data and the lack of diversity among academic staff – the Stuart Hall Foundation is working in partnership with universities in the UK and internationally to continue Professor Stuart Hall’s life-long commitment to teaching.
It was with this in mind that the first Stuart Hall scholarship was established, in conjunction with the Perinatal, Child, Adolescent and Family Work: a Psychoanalytic Observational Approach (M7) training at Tavistock Education and Training. This was followed up with two joint bursaries and this current offer of support to the recipients of NHS England funding is an extension to our interest and commitment to supporting and sustaining change in public health.
