FAQs: Psychodynamic psychotherapy (M58)

Explore Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) relating to our new training in Psychodynamic psychotherapy (M58).

What exactly is changing?

We are consolidating our foundation and qualifying training in psychodynamic and forensic psychotherapy into one, streamlined course.

This means that, rather than first undertaking our Master’s degree in Foundations of psychodynamic psychotherapy (D58/BD58) and then applying for our qualifying Inter-cultural psychodynamic psychotherapy (D59I) or Forensic psychodynamic psychotherapy (D59F) training, you only need to undertake one course: the new Master’s degree (MA), Psychodynamic psychotherapy (M58/BM58).

Students on this new course may choose to graduate after three years (and successful completion of the dissertation) with a Master’s degree, or complete the full four years of training and also be eligible to practise as a psychodynamic or forensic psychotherapist. The new course will be validated by the University of Essex, and accredited by the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC).

For our students in and around Leeds, our Foundations of psychodynamic psychotherapy (D58L, Leeds) will also be replaced by the new Master’s degree (MA), Psychodynamic psychotherapy (M58L, Leeds).

What are the reasons for this change?

By combining our foundation and qualifying courses into one training, we aim to offer a smoother and more cohesive learning experience for our students.

Will the new course offer the same level of validation and accreditation?

The new Psychodynamic psychotherapy (M58/BM58) Master’s degree (MA) course will be validated by the University of Essex, and accredited by the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) – meaning that it will have the same levels of validation and accreditation as our existing trainings.

I am a current D58/BD58/D58L student – how does this affect me?

This consolidation does not affect your current training. You will continue and complete the D58/BD58/D58L course, receiving your Master’s degree, validated by the University of Essex.

After you have completed this foundation course, you may wish to continue onto qualifying training. We plan to continue delivering our Inter-cultural psychodynamic psychotherapy (D59I) and Forensic psychodynamic psychotherapy (D59F) courses for the coming academic year (2024/25).

Following the academic year 24/25, you will need to apply to join the third year of our Psychodynamic psychotherapy (M58/BM58) course to complete your clinical training.

At that time, we will be happy to discuss your specific experience and circumstances, and provide more information about associated entry requirements.

I am a current D59I/D59F student – how does this affect me?

This consolidation does not affect your current training. You will continue and complete the D59I/D59F course, receiving your accreditation from the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC).
