In this new series of open lectures, our Advanced practice and research: consultation and the organisation (D10D) team welcome eminent external speakers to present on a range of themes related to organisational and social dynamics.
In this free lecture, taking place on Thursday 9 October 2025, Dr Catherine Sandler will present on ‘Aspects of psychodynamic executive coaching’.

About this lecture:
This talk will focus on Dr Catherine Sandler’s approach to psychodynamic executive coaching. Drawing on her highly successful 2011 book Executive Coaching: A Psychodynamic Approach, as well as her forthcoming book Why Good People Behave Badly at Work – and What We Can Do About It, Catherine will describe her work, and especially how she builds relationships with clients and forms early hypotheses about key issues. She will illustrate this with (disguised and anonymised) examples from her practice.
About this speaker:
Dr Catherine Sandler is one of the UK’s most experienced executive coaches. Alongside 30 years of coaching leaders, she has taught at London Business School, INSEAD and the Tavistock Clinic. She takes an empathic and practical approach to coaching is comfortable in the role of trusted adviser when appropriate. Many of her coachees have transformed their leadership through overcoming entrenched patterns of behaviour that were holding them back.
Catherine’s 2011 book Executive Coaching: A Psychodynamic Approach is recommended reading on training programmes worldwide. She speaks regularly on coaching-related topics, has published several articles and been interviewed by The Times and Financial Times. She is a longstanding coaching supervisor and runs a popular series of webinars.
The organisations that Catherine has worked with over the past 30 years include AXA, Baker McKenzie, Barclays, BP, Burberry, Channel 4, EY, Harrods, John Lewis, Kingsley Napley, Lloyds Banking Group, PayPal, Unilever and WD 40 among numerous others. Some of her clients in the not-for-profit sector include the BBC, London Business School, NHS, Tate, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, and Save the Children UK.
