A therapist and patient talking in a therapy room

Navigating emotions and politics in the therapy room

Expand your understanding of the use of emotional processes in your thinking and practice as a psychotherapist.

Join us for a two-day conference exploring the central role of emotions within the therapeutic space, and how these are intimately connected to the multiple social, political and psychological contexts which we all inhabit.

Bringing together systemic thinkers and practitioners from The Tavistock Centre and The Systemic-Dialogical Psychotherapy School, this event will also include a keynote address from renowned psychiatrist and psychotherapist, Paolo Bertrando.

Who is this conference for?

This conference is suitable for professionals working across the health, social care, education, justice and charity sectors, in the roles of:

  • Psychotherapists (qualified and in training, all modalities)
  • Psychotherapy supervisors and trainers
  • Counselling/Clinical psychologists (qualified and in training)
  • Social workers
  • Psychiatrists
  • Mental health nurses
  • Other mental health practitioners
  • Occupational/family therapists

What will I learn?

Over two days, you will:

“Emotions are relational, living, recursive narratives that are enacted and shaped within the therapeutic relationship itself. The primary aim of the conference is to sharpen our focus on the emotional patterns and processes in the room. We are particularly concerned with the emotions that arise within the clinician as responses to the broader socio-political and cultural narratives that inevitably permeate the therapeutic space. We hope to provide an environment where we are invited to engage authentically with the complexity of emotions in today’s clinical and social landscape, equipping us a with a greater awareness of our ethical responsibilities in the therapeutic domain.”
