Our merger with North London NHS Foundation Trust
The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust will soon be merging with North London NHS Foundation Trust (NLFT). We will become part of NLFT on Wednesday 1 April 2026.
All our postgraduate and CPD courses offered for 2026/27 will remain unchanged. You will study the same curricula, relating to the same Tavistock approaches, work with the same educators and administrators, and complete your course as planned.
This merger presents an exciting opportunity to enhance and strengthen child and adult mental health services in north London and beyond, while also retaining and growing our pioneering education, training and research.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
We understand that you may have questions about our merger. Please find some helpful information below – and if you have any other queries, please contact us.
Who is North London NHS Foundation Trust?
North London NHS Foundation Trust (NLFT) provide high-quality mental health care to local people across the London Boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington. Most of NFLT’s services are based in the community, but they also provide inpatient mental health services in hospitals and more specialist mental health services for a broader population. This includes an Eating Disorder Service in Haringey, a Gangs and Violence programme for 18–24-year-olds, and the North London Forensic Service to treat people in the criminal justice system with mental health issues. The Trust also runs a single Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) division across Barnet, Enfield and Haringey.
What is a merger by acquisition?
A merger by acquisition refers to a situation where one NHS trust acquires another trust to create a new, larger organisation. In our case, North London is the acquiring trust, meaning it takes over the assets and responsibilities of the Tavistock and Portman from Wednesday 1 April 2026.
How will the merger affect our relationship with validating partners and accrediting bodies?
The merger will have no impact on relationships with the University of Essex, who will continue to validate our degrees, or accrediting bodies such as the British Psychoanalytic Council, The British Psychological Society or the Association of Child Psychotherapists. All existing partnerships and accreditations will continue unchanged.
Will the merger affect my course?
Our education and training courses will continue as normal, and we do not anticipate any impact on students as a result.
