Welcome from our Dean
Mark Freestone
Thank you for your interest in the Tavistock and Portman and welcome to our 2025/26 digital prospectus. I am delighted that you are interested in joining our community of trainees and students, which has been in existence for over 100 years, since the first Tavistock Clinic opened its doors in 1920.
One of the great strengths of The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust is our distinctive fusion of clinical practice, research and education. Our international reputation for innovation in the fields of mental health and emotional wellbeing has been built on this holistic model, and we are justly proud of our rich history and heritage. So many of the ideas developed at The Tavistock and Portman – attachment theory, relational practice, the unconscious in organisations – now define systems of care and development across the globe. Our students, learners and trainees guarantee that these ideas continue to evolve and to have a future in services and research.
Today, with demand for mental health services rising nationally and internationally, we remain committed to this spirit of innovation: whether by establishing new and exciting partnerships and research projects, or through the ongoing development of a workforce trained to meet the ever-evolving needs of the populations we serve.
I encourage you to come and explore all that The Tavistock and Portman has to offer: join an open day or course taster session, meet our faculty and professional services staff, and speak to current students and alumni. Whether you’re starting out on a new career path or taking your training to the next level, we welcome you warmly and look forward to supporting your learning.
