Student on Complex Trauma: the Tavistock Model (D19)

“Complex trauma has been my specialist interest area for some time, and I was keen to specialise in it further. It was the first time I saw an in-depth psychoanalytic course in this area, and I jumped at the chance to apply. Knowing that I would be training at such a well-known institution as the Tavistock made it an even more exciting opportunity.

Although the course provides a pluralistic approach in terms of the different trauma topics, I was pleased that these were always embedded in a strong psychoanalytic tradition which was not compromised. The knowledge gained during the course is directly relevant to my private and lecturing work, and I feel the course has deeply enhanced my trauma-focused theoretical and clinical thinking. Undoubtedly, the biggest learning has been the close and creative supervision of my clinical work.

I think what is most special about the course is being part of an incredibly supportive and collegiate team culture, which is absolutely necessary if you’re working with complex trauma patients. I feel I am part of a special group of colleagues, and the Tavistock Trauma Service now feels like a professional home.

There is so much going on at the Tavistock that you benefit not only from the course but also from the termly trauma lectures, specialist workshops and fascinating Trust-wide lectures. So, if you’re planning on joining the course, make sure you allocate adequate time to make the most of your two years at Tavistock Education and Training. I feel proud to have been on the first cohort of this trail-blazing training.”
