“I decided to train at the Tavistock because of the focus on psychoanalytic concepts, group dynamics, and the emphasis on a relational approach to Educational Psychology practice. I like hearing and learning from my peers and discussing different aspects of the Educational Psychologist role with them. I also really enjoyed the CAMHS placement in my first year, where I got to experience an NHS service for young people. Additionally, I enjoy learning about groups and how they function, and applying this directly to my work as an Educational Psychologist.
I have noticed that I am much more aware of my own thoughts and feelings. I feel more comfortable exploring uncomfortable feelings and thinking about my own defences. This has supported a more open, reflective approach in my work and practice. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of support I have received from personal supervisors and course tutors regarding assignments, tasks, and overall well-being. The learning experience at the Tavistock Education and Training is rooted in a relational approach taken by staff, which has supported my learning as a trainee and has helped me learn about myself in the role.
My advice to anyone considering applying to the Tavistock is to be open to new experiences. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experiential approach to learning here. While navigating the uncertainty of deep reflective learning can be unsettling for some at first, I would encourage you to stay open and embrace everything you can from the experiences coming your way.”
