Parental mental illness from the perspective of the families
Join us for a free evening of film, lived experience and conversation, exploring the impact of parental mental illness.
One in three children lives with a parent experiencing poor mental health. What does this mean for the professionals supporting them?
Join Tavistock Education and Training and Our Time Charity on Monday 9 November 2026 for a free evening of film, lived experience and conversation, exploring the impact of parental mental illness from the perspective of families and children.
Programme
This event will include a welcome presentation from Dympna Cunnane, the CEO of Our Time Charity; the screening of a new film, “The Wall”; and a panel discussion, featuring filmmaker John Robert Lee and Systemic Psychotherapist Conny Kerman.
Commissioned by Our Time Charity, “The Wall” offers a powerful insight into the realities of living with parental mental illness. By hearing directly from families with lived experience, attendees will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding, reflect on their professional practice, and consider how families may be better supported.

- 5:45pm: Welcome
- 6:00pm: Film Screening

Who is this event for?
This event is open to all professionals whose work brings them into contact with children, young people and families affected by parental mental illness. This includes practitioners from mental health services, social care, family therapy, education and children’s services, as well as commissioners, policymakers and service leaders.
The event is particularly relevant for professionals who recognise the importance of supporting the whole family but may feel uncertain about how best to address the needs of children when a parent is experiencing mental ill health.
