The therapist’s use of self in the therapeutic relationship (CF18)

Potentials, pitfalls and everything in between

Dr Harry Aponte has been developing his ideas about the use of the self of the therapist for the service of the client for many years, culminating in many publications, one most recently, ‘The Person of the Therapist Training Model: Mastering the Use of Self’, outlining his own unique framework. In this seminar, Dr Aponte will give an overview about how ideas of self have developed over time in the systemic field, including his own model, and provide us with an opportunity to see in action the synthesis of his own ideas and practice.

Aims and learning objectives

  • As one of the first American pioneers of Family Therapy, the seminar offers and unique opportunity to hear Dr Aponte’s experiences and thinking about the self of the therapist over the decades, including his own creative model for expanding our ideas
  • In the seminar, Dr Aponte will carry out an interview with a family therapist to illustrate his model

Who is this seminar for?

This seminar will be useful for anyone interested in developing their thinking and practice about the therapeutic use of self, whether you are a therapist or student of psychotherapy, including individual, family and couple psychotherapists, social workers, clinical psychologists, counselling psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, drama/art therapists, and anyone working or training in the mental health field.

Seminar details

The self of the therapist is a phrase often heard and spoken about in psychotherapy, in particular systemic, training as a competency, outcome, process, skill, an art, developed over time and experience. Yet, what do we mean when we think about ‘use of self’ in therapy?

As one of the original American pioneers of systemic psychotherapy, Dr Harry Aponte has spent several decades fine-tuning his ideas about the self of the therapist and offers this unique opportunity to be in dialogue with him about the creative and intuitive use of our personal selves in therapy.

His approach emphasises the myriad ways in which the self of the therapist – ‘our own personal life’s journey with all its pains and struggles’ (Aponte) – can be used in the process of therapy and in the service of the client. Dr Aponte will elaborate on the theoretical and practical aspects of his approach as well as provide examples of this way of working.
